India’s government told the Rajya Sabha(the Upper House of Parliament) that 352 significant technical defects were reported in domestic and international flight operations in the first six months of 2026. Of those, 334 occurred on domestic services and 18 on international flights. The figures came in a written reply by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol on 3 August, responding to a question from MP John Brittas.
The airline breakdown for the period is uneven. Akasa Air accounted for 152 of the defects, followed by Air India Express with 53, IndiGo with 47 and Air India with 46. Smaller operators also appear in the list. Star Air recorded 29, SpiceJet and Fly91 nine each, India One Air 5 and Blue Dart 2. Across the longer window from 2023 to June 2026 the cumulative total reaches 2,420 significant technical defects. In the same broader period the DGCA issued 382 show-cause notices for safety violations.
'Significant technical defect' is a regulatory category, not a casual description. It covers failures or malfunctions that affect the airworthiness or operational safety of an aircraft and must be reported under DGCA rules. The number does not automatically pose equal imminent danger to passengers but many such defects are detected on the ground during pre-flight checks or after landing and are rectified before the next flight. What the figure does reveal is the volume of issues that operators and the regulator are now formally recording.
Two interpretations are revealed side by side. One is that India’s safety culture is improving and more rigorous reporting, tighter surveillance and a willingness to place the numbers in the public domain through Parliament. The other is that rapid fleet growth, high utilisation rates and pressure on maintenance capacity are simply generating more defects that older, less transparent systems would have under-reported. Higher reporting rates often appear when oversight strengthens, yet the absolute numbers still require credible root-cause analysis, spare-parts availability and consistent engineering standards across carriers of very different sizes.
The practical meaning is limited without context. A single defect on an aircraft that is grounded and fixed is less concerning than a pattern of recurring failures that escape detection until flight. The same data feed into risk models and maintenance-reserve calculations may worry insurers and lessors. The test is whether the 382 show-cause notices and any subsequent enforcement actions produce measurable reduction in repeat defects rather than simply documenting them. The challenge for the regulator is that operators have to move from regular tick-boxing the sheets culture to real measurable reductions and documenting them for rigorous audit.
The parliamentary disclosure does not resolve the debate. It does, however, make the scale of the issue visible. 352 significant technical defects in six months is a large enough number to demand sustained attention to maintenance practices, reporting discipline and the capacity of both airlines and the DGCA to keep pace with India’s expanding operations. Whether the system is catching up or merely catching more problems will be measured by the trend line in the next set of figures, not by this single snapshot.
