Airbound has raised $37 million in a Series A led by Greenoaks, with DoorDash among the participants, taking its total capital to nearly $50 million since 2023. The Bengaluru company designs a blended-wing tailsitter that takes off vertically and cruises on wings. Its current aircraft weighs about 1.5 kilograms and carries a one-kilogram payload, a ratio the firm says is three times better than typical logistics drones. The money will go to engineering, manufacturing and a planned delivery network across three Andhra Pradesh cities, with a public target of 10,000 flights a day for healthcare, retail and e-commerce.
The aircraft is the easy part of that sentence. Ten thousand daily flights is an air-traffic and ground-operations problem. It requires beyond-visual-line-of-sight corridors or a dense mesh of observers and landing points that keep most sorties inside visual rules. It requires a traffic-management system that can sequence hundreds of small aircraft without conflicting with manned traffic, other drones or restricted airspace. It requires landing sites that are legal, powered, weather-tolerant and acceptable to the people who live under them. Batteries must be swapped or charged on a rhythm that matches utilisation. Customers must pay enough to cover aircraft, pilots or remote operators, insurance and failed deliveries. Someone must accept liability when a vehicle comes down in the wrong place.
Airbound’s existing work is smaller and more controlled. It has flown medical-sample routes in Bengaluru with Narayana Health and accumulated thousands of autonomous sorties in southern India. Those corridors prove that a light aircraft can move a kilogram of cargo faster than a van on a short urban hop. They do not prove that a three-city network can run at airline-like frequency. The Andhra plan linking Amaravati, Vijayawada and Guntur, starting in phases from Guntur depends on the state helping with permissions and a ground-observer framework rather than on a large government purchase contract. That is honest. It also means private shippers must show up with volume.
Andhra Pradesh could become India’s first serious drone-delivery testbed. The state has political attention on drones, relatively open geography compared with Mumbai or Delhi, and a capital-region plan that can be designed around corridors instead of retrofitted onto an already saturated city. It could equally become the first large demonstration that flight-count targets outrun infrastructure. Weather, public complaint, a single high-profile incident or a slow digital sky approval can cap utilisation long before the factory runs out of airframes.
The Series A buys time to find out which of those futures arrives. Payload ratio and production rate matter. So do UTM integration, crash liability, battery logistics and whether a shop in Guntur will pay more for a 20-minute aerial hop than for a truck that already exists. India has no shortage of drone prototypes. It has a shortage of networks that fly every day at commercial density. Ten thousand flights is the claim that will measure that gap.
