A Smell in One Control Room Stopped Four Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily stopped operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National, Washington Dulles, Baltimore-Washington and Richmond after a strong chemical smell affected controllers at Potomac TRACON, the terminal radar approach control facility that manages the region’s busy airspace. The agency stated there were no aircraft-safety impacts. Flights were held on the ground while the facility was assessed and controllers returned to duty.

Modern air navigation is layered with digital systems, radar feeds, data links and automated conflict alerts. Yet the system still depends on people sitting in a physical room who can see, hear, speak and decide without interruption. When that room becomes uninhabitable—even briefly—the traffic it controls stops. Four airports lost their approach and departure sequencing because the controllers who provide it could not remain at their positions.

Indoor-air quality, equipment heat loads, contractor work on circuit boards or monitors, and the speed of evacuation protocols all become operational variables. Backup or contingency facilities exist for some centres, but transferring a major terminal-area workload is not instantaneous. Frequencies must be reassigned, sector boundaries adjusted, and traffic volumes reduced until the receiving unit can absorb the load safely. The residual delays that follow even a short interruption show how little spare capacity the system carries at peak times.

The same vulnerability appears wherever a single control facility serves multiple high-volume airports. Redundancy in radar and communications does not automatically create redundancy in human working conditions. Smoke, chemical odours, power faults or environmental failures inside the building can force the same outcome as a major technical outage: aircraft held, airborne flights delayed or diverted, and a recovery period measured in hours rather than minutes.

Aviation invests heavily in aircraft systems, surveillance networks and software that can continue operating through component failures. The control room remains a concentrated point of human dependence. When the air in that room becomes the problem, the most sophisticated terminal-area system in the country still has to wait until people can safely return to their seats.
