Follow one A321neo. A cadet still needs hours before that aeroplane has a crew. Orient Flights opened Andhra Pradesh’s first flying school at Kurnool on 26 September with three trainers and a plan for ten. The minister repeated a government range of 25,000 to 30,000 extra pilots in 10 to 15 years. The school’s opening target is 60 pilots a year. A type rating comes after the commercial licence and is a separate bill. India has not published a single official table of pilots, certifying engineers, technicians, planners and inspectors required by 2030 and 2035. Without that table, fleet orders run ahead of the people who sign the release.
The same aeroplane arrives from Toulouse. About a dozen IndiGo A321neos stay idle on Airbus’s stringer-coating quality issue. Airbus says it is not a safety grounding. EASA has said it sees no immediate safety concern. The repair window in Reuters-sourced accounts is two years and up to nine days in a hangar. IndiGo and Air India together fly about 190 A321neos. One aircraft off the line for paint and primer is a bank of seats. Twelve is a winter plan. Hangar slots, approved materials and structural staff have to exist in India or the work waits overseas.
Then the engine. StandardAero and GMR Aero Technic agreed on 23 September to add on-wing support in India for CFM56-7B, LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B. StandardAero counts about 1000 LEAP engines in Indian service and 3200 on order, plus more than 100 CFM56-7B units still flying. On-wing work is a borescope and a night fix with the engine on the wing. A shop visit is an engine in a crate. India still sends much of that heavy work abroad. The new pact comes with task lists, typical hours or how many extra licensed engineers will be trained. GMR already works 12 Indian airports and one in Nepal. That is line and base reach. It is not a full LEAP overhaul plant on every apron.
The daily flight is the last step. Pilot current. Airframe released after the coating visit or a routine check. Engine either cleared on-wing or swapped. A component that fails still needs a shop and a part number. If the part and the approval sit in Europe or the United States, the aircraft waits. Airports need hangars and night logistics for that wait to be short. Those square metres are not in the aircraft order.
India is buying aeroplanes faster than it has published the industrial plan to hold them. Training, on-wing engines and a quality repair on the A321neo are three current answers. A measured ecosystem needs to be built before they arrive. The test is simple. Hours in the student logbook. Engines that return without a long export. Hangars that take the nine-day job. Until those clocks are public, the constraint is maintenance and people, not demand.
