One Drone Sighting May Shut An Airport For Two Hours

Hanover Airport suspended runway operations for nearly two hours after an unidentified drone was sighted in the early morning. Departures were delayed and a cargo aircraft arriving from Paris was diverted to Nuremberg. Operations later resumed, and authorities opened an investigation into the origin and operator of the aircraft. The interruption was short by the standards of major weather events. It was long enough to demonstrate how little certainty airports still have when a small unmanned system appears near active runways.

Detection is only the first step. Once a drone is reported, controllers and airport authorities must decide whether the object is still present, whether it poses a collision risk, and whether continued operations are safe. Identification is frequently incomplete. The operator is rarely located in real time. Legal authority to jam, capture or destroy the device is constrained by national rules on radio spectrum, weapons use and liability. In many jurisdictions the default response remains the most conservative one available, stop the aircraft movements until the uncertainty ends.

That gap between detection and neutralisation is the operational problem. Every minute of suspended runway time cascades into delayed passengers, disrupted crew duty limits, diverted freighters, extra fuel burn and knock-on schedule effects at other airports. Cargo operators lose time-sensitive connections. Airlines absorb the cost of aircraft and crew out of position. The airport itself loses throughput that cannot be recovered later in the day. Yet the tools that would shorten the uncertainty, reliable electronic detection, positive identification, and a clear, rapid legal pathway to defeat or force the drone to land, remain unevenly deployed and tightly restricted.

Similar sightings have already forced closures or diversions at multiple European airports. Each event follows a recognisable pattern like visual or radar report, temporary suspension, police response, eventual all-clear, and a residual investigation that rarely produces an immediate public identification of the operator. The technology to detect and track small drones has improved. The institutional and legal framework that would allow an airport or its security partners to end the threat without waiting for the drone to leave of its own accord has not kept pace.

Airports cannot treat every drone as a full-scale security crisis, nor can they ignore the risk of collision or deliberate interference. Until detection, identification, authority and response are joined in a coherent chain that works in minutes rather than hours, a single small aircraft will continue to hold the power to stop a runway. Hanover’s two-hour interruption is simply the latest demonstration of that imbalance.
