A drone reported near an active runway forces the same decision almost every time. Controllers halt departures, hold arrivals or close the airspace until the object is identified or disappears. The reason is not bureaucratic caution. It is the combination of where aircraft are most exposed and what a small unmanned machine can do if it meets one.
Commercial jets spend the critical minutes of takeoff, climb, approach and landing at low altitude and relatively low speed. Flaps are extended, gear is down or about to be, engines are changing thrust and crews are managing a dense sequence of clearances. A drone that drifts into that corridor sits in the only path the aircraft can use. There is little height or time to recover if something strikes the airframe.
Unlike a bird, a drone is built from hard materials. Motors, circuit boards, cameras and lithium batteries do not crush the way soft tissue does. Research and testing show that ingestion into a turbofan can damage fan blades, create vibration or force an engine shutdown. A strike on the windscreen can crack glass and distract the crew. Impact on sensors or leading edges can degrade instruments or handling precisely when accuracy matters most. Even without contact, the mere sighting triggers go-arounds, delayed takeoffs and cascading delays across the network.
History has already measured the cost. In December 2018 Gatwick Airport was disrupted for roughly thirty-six hours by repeated drone reports. Around a thousand flights were cancelled or diverted and some 140000 passengers were affected. The operators were never publicly identified with certainty, yet the operational effect was immediate and large. Similar though shorter closures have occurred at major airports across Europe, the Middle East and North America whenever an unidentified object appears in the circuit. In the United States the aviation regulator still receives more than a hundred drone-sighting reports near airports in a typical month. Most do not produce collisions. Almost all produce disruption.
Not every sighting is hostile. Many are careless recreational flights, lost machines or unauthorised photography. Some, especially near military or dual-use airfields, raise harder questions about surveillance or probing of response times. Authorities cannot distinguish intent from the ground in real time. Detection of a small, low-flying object against urban clutter remains imperfect and legal limits on jamming or kinetic interceptors near civilian runways often leave temporary closure as the safest immediate option.
The result is a structural vulnerability. Airports that share airspace with dense populations or military facilities face repeated tests of the same weak points, who sees the drone first, who has authority to act and how long passenger operations must pause while the answer is found. As long as small unmanned aircraft remain cheap, capable and easy to launch, a single confirmed sighting will continue to carry outsized consequences. The danger is not theoretical. It is the product of physics in the approach path and uncertainty on the ground.
