Typhoon Dolphin moved across the East China Sea in early August, first disrupting Okinawa and surrounding islands, then tracking toward eastern China. Japan Airlines and other carriers warned of disruptions on routes to Taipei and Shanghai. Hong Kong cancelled or rescheduled services to Okinawa, Ishigaki and mainland Chinese cities. Taiwanese airlines cancelled multiple flights to Shanghai and adjusted Okinawa operations, in some cases upsizing aircraft or adding recovery flights to clear stranded passengers. Once the storm made landfall in Zhejiang, Shanghai’s two main airports cancelled more than a thousand flights in a single day while residual rain continued to affect the network.
The pattern is familiar. A single weather system sequentially stresses several high-density corridors that link Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. What matters is not the existence of cancellations but how the network absorbs them. Major hubs with dense frequencies and large fleets can rebook, upsize and recover relatively quickly. Thinner regional links, especially those serving leisure destinations or secondary cities, leave passengers with fewer same-day alternatives and longer waits for the next available seat. Recovery nodes emerge where airlines hold spare capacity or can rapidly redeploy larger aircraft. Elsewhere the system simply stops until the weather clears and the schedule rebuilds.
Asian airline schedules have been optimised for high aircraft utilisation and tight turnarounds. That model maximises yields in normal conditions. It leaves limited slack when a typhoon forces multi-day closures or sequential disruptions across several airports. The result is a cascade. Aircraft out of position, crews timing out, connecting passengers stranded, and recovery stretched over days rather than hours. Climate-driven extremes are no longer rare events. They are recurrent stress tests of whether the network still contains enough flexibility, spare aircraft, flexible crew rules, alternative routing and passenger-care capacity, to keep moving when one or more hubs are temporarily removed from the map.
Typhoon Dolphin is therefore less a weather story than a live audit of East Asian network design. It shows which links can absorb a shock and which passengers are left waiting because the schedule was built for efficiency rather than resilience.
