Axens has begun development of the ERA(Ethanol to Refuel Aviation) project through a dedicated company called SAFIRIS to build France’s first industrial-scale sustainable aviation fuel plant based on advanced bioethanol. The unit will use Axens and IFPEN’s JETANOL technology to convert bioethanol into jet fuel and is sized for 50,000 tonnes of SAF a year with production targeted for 2030. Site selection in France is under way and the project remains in the engineering phase.
The move diversifies Europe’s SAF feedstock base beyond the dominant HEFA pathway that relies on waste oils and animal fats. JETANOL converts ethanol through dehydration, oligomerization and hydrogenation, opening a route that draws on advanced bioethanol derived from biomass residues. That choice matters because European SAF demand is set to rise sharply. Flights departing France alone are projected to require more than one million tonnes of SAF annually by 2035 under ReFuelEU trajectories.
Bioethanol availability, however, will compete with other Alcohol-to-Jet and HEFA projects for the same limited pool of sustainable European biomass. Waste-oil supplies for HEFA are already constrained and face competing demand from road transport and other markets. Advanced ethanol from agricultural or forestry residues offers an alternative stream, yet it must still meet strict sustainability criteria and secure long-term offtake at competitive cost. Multiple European AtJ and HEFA developments are advancing in parallel, raising the risk that feedstock competition, rather than technology readiness, becomes the binding constraint on scale-up.
ERA therefore represents both a technical diversification and a test of whether France and Europe can mobilise sufficient advanced ethanol without simply shifting scarcity from one feedstock category to another. If the plant reaches production on schedule and at viable cost, it will add a measurable new source of SAF. If feedstock prices or availability tighten further, the same constraints that already limit HEFA growth could slow the bioethanol route as well. The project’s real significance will be measured less by its technology claim and more by whether the biomass supply chain can keep pace with the mandates it is designed to serve.
